‘Faces, Places and Spaces’ - Cookridge Primary School

CapeUK West Yorkshire (Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, Calderdale, Kirklees)

Cookridge Primary School is developing a project that addresses their School Improvement Plan’s priority of providing greater opportunities for pupils to take more responsibility for learning by including research, co-operation and presentation skills in their activity.

Enquiry Question:

What is the relationship between a localised curriculum and creativity?

Project Description

Cookridge Primary is working with their local community to create links with the school and to give their pupils the opportunity to explore their local environment and engage with people outside of the school.

The theme of the project is ‘Faces, Places and Spaces’, and pupils will be visiting nearby ‘Places and Spaces’, such as a nature reserve and meeting the ‘Faces’ that live and work there. Through these meetings they will discover more about the area they live in and identify problems affecting those places.

Pupils will be encouraged to work together to find different solutions to the problems and then present their solutions in celebration events to family, friends and local residents.

Project Outcomes

The emphasis is on the processes employed by the children and the 'journey' that they will experience through the project. They will examine ways of working together, methods of research, presenting options, considering impacts, evaluating and reflecting upon their own thinking and performance.

The impact of the project will be focused on pupils’ problem solving, divergent thinking and cooperation, although it is clear that there will be many other aspects as well.
